E-learning Theories
This week, I came across with 3 major learning theories namely behaviorism, cognitivism and socialculturalism.
Behaviorism
Behaviorism is suited for the teaching and learning of simple, structured and non-abstract problem. It is also related with a form of rewards and punishment system.
For example, in primary school, the pupil learn about basic mathematics like 2 plus 2 is 4. The teacher show them how to calculate by using fingers to count. If they count correctly, she will reward them a candy or else she will use a ruler to hit their palms. By doing that, they will not count wrongly next time because they are scared of the punishment. As a child, they are rewarded for studying hard and punished when they make mistakes.
Cognitivism
On the other hand, cognitivism, emphasizes on factors within the learner in terms of development of cognitive structures, processes and representation which means the learners do not simply receive the information from instructor. They process and think carefully about the information before accepting it instead of following "monkey see, monkey do" method.
For instance, when I join IVLE forum for online discussion, before posting any answers, I need to read through all the comments, answers, questions carefully then I process the information and tabulate the answers.
Socialculturalism
The third theory is socialculturalism which focuses on activity system, not the individual. This theory requires learners work closely as a team in which each member plays specific role. Socialculturalism based on interaction with people and the tools that the culture provides to help form their own view of the world.
For example, there are many free website templates on the internet where users can download and use for free. In this platform, the programmers and coders contribute their designs voluntarily. By doing that, they can learn from other members' designs.
To sum up, these major learning theories give me a new perspective about pedagogy. I hope I can find the best theory which suits my learning style most. Then I can adjust my learning method and study better.
Ps: I've read the blogs of Sok Wan, Shifa and Xue Ying
I responded on Sok Wan's blog.
